The article explains several features of OpenLDAP, an LDAP free Open Source implementation, in a complete and exhaustive way.
The one published in the 56th issue of  "Login" is the first of a set of articles on OpenLDAP.
This is part of a wider project, aiming to introduce this new technology. On the next "Login" issues, another two articles will be published, in order to deepen and complete all information given in the first one.

LDAP (Lightwheight Directory Access Protocol) is a lightweight protocol for user directory management, very easy to use for account management and information replication among various servers. In particular, with OpenLDAP you need just one login (one username, one password) to enter enabled services.

The article gives you a full overview of this protocol, introducing the topic with a thorough description of how OpenLDAP works, explaining slapd and slurpd directory servers, providing a detailed explanation on how to build and install this software and some samples of code.

The report deals even with the problem of security and describes some processes running in OpenLDAP.
Additionally, a short paragragh is on database creation, both online and offline.

In conclusion Chiara Balpo, a member of Redomino Team and author of the article, invites readers to try personally OpenLDAP, in order to discover its benefits compared to traditional protocols.
Redomino renews this invitation to all users.
