Plone is a free, open source and multiplatform content management system (CMS).
This is an Open Source technology, spread under GPL licence letting the user to use freely Plone, bringing several improvements to the product and releasing modifications in the same way.

Originally Plone had a workflow control, security and preconfigurated roles, several content models and a multilingual support, translated into more than 30 languages.

Plone Development Team is made up of hundreds of developers all over the world, who constantly work together for the development of this web application.

Plone is a tool allowing to reach, update and manage the contents in a easy way, moreover it pays great attention to usability and accessibility, obeying to the US Section 508 and the W3C guidelines.

That is a technology which can work on different platforms, including GNU/Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, Solaris and BSD.

Plone is based on Zope, a framework (CMF, Content Management Framework) building content elaboration softwares.

Plone brings to Zope at least two useful functionality.

  • First an efficient and elegant framework for the navigation, based on folders and their content, with tools like Bulletin which displays the created and modified objects. In this way, the web site based on Plone looks easy and quick to use.
  • The other functionality consists in simple tools for the creation of structured documents, even complex, as PIQ and UPC models: different parts of each document are visible by users groups and with an approval path which can be personalized.
